Kids back to school = Mom back to work?

I was speaking with a new client yesterday morning - a stay at home mom excited to return to full-time employment. After we worked through her background, strengths, skills, computer knowledge, past positions, part-time work, and volunteer roles over the past six years, the topic of interviewing came up — along with an a-ha moment.

To moms everywhere - if you stayed home with your children, when the time comes to interview for full-time employment outside of the home, OWN YOUR DECISION.  Stand by your choice to step aside from your career 3, 5, 7, or 10 years ago and do not waiver.

Do not sound apologetic or regretful. Stand confident that it was the right decision for you at the time just as returning to the paid workforce is the right decision for you now. Yes, you may have stepped aside for a period of time, but you're stronger for your experiences. Answer the question as a matter of fact and without hesitation. Experience sells. You and I both know you will be an amazing addition to the team - show them!

Woo-hoo! That's right! Stand by your decision and be proud of it because your children are the most important "job" in the world. Employers are more understanding these days about return-to-work moms. So, be proud of staying home and show it.
