Resume blunders: etc.

Etc.

It's a harmless word. I've used it myself in emails and notes, but where's the one place I cringe every single time I see it?  On a resume.

Resume writing at its best is short, concise, and tight. Every sentence should have purpose and direction. Every word should count. In this setting, "etc." almost always sounds unprofessional and, dare I say, flippant.

If you're including a series of items on your resume, a better way to structure the sentence is to introduce the list with any one of the following: 

            such as        including        for instance        namely         for example  

Each of these accomplishes the same thing as "etc." — letting the reader know the list is not all-inclusive — while sounding much more polished and purposeful.
